Your Consultation
Your first session involves a full consultation to find out about your general state of health. Your practitioner will ask you questions regarding your past and present medical history as well as about your diet, sleeping patterns, emotional state and any relevant family conditions. This can also include any investigative tests carried out recently eg x-rays, scans, medication, blood tests etc. If you are having acupuncture, your pulses may be felt on both wrists to give an indication of the wellbeing of the twelve meridians which each pulse equates to. The structure, colour and coating of your tongue can also provide additional information about your health.
It is best to wear loose clothing and not eat a large meal or drink strong coffee or alcohol prior to a consultation.
Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles around your body (head, ears, torso, legs and arms) and not necessarily at the point of pain. The needles can be left in for 20-40mins or removed immediately. Sometimes moxibustion is used. You may feel a tingling or dull ache sensation, but usually no discomfort when the needles are inserted.

As predicted by the Orthopaedic Consultants, my condition has deteriorated with age. While acupuncture has not cured it, it has given a great deal of pain relief and consequently, increased mobility, for which I am very thankful.

Acupuncturist’s Perspective: While Traditional Chinese Acupuncture can never cure osteoarthritis, it is very effective in reducing the pain and symptoms, thus facilitating as near a normal life style as possible.
The whole experience of acupuncture for me was a positive one. After the sessions were over I felt relaxed and would always have a good nights sleep. The days following, I seemed to have more energy. At the beginning, I started once a week, which reduced to once a month.
After six months of attending sessions, I fell pregnant. I still attended throughout my pregnancy and found them to be extremely relaxing and have only just stopped.
I would recommend acupuncture to anyone in my position, as I fully believed it contributed to the recovery of depression and the eventual pregnancy.
Acupuncturist’s Perspective: Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is very good at de-stressing and relaxing certain individuals. Stress can be a major contributing factor in some fertility cases.
Osteopath’s Perspective: Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle and effective treatment and can be an alternative to the more commonly known structural osteopathy. It is helpful for all ages but is often associated with the treatment of babies.
