Your Consultation

Your first session involves a full consultation to find out about your general state of health. Your practitioner will ask you questions regarding your past and present medical history as well as about your diet, sleeping patterns, emotional state and any relevant family conditions. This can also include any investigative tests carried out recently eg x-rays, scans, medication, blood tests etc. If you are having acupuncture, your pulses may be felt on both wrists to give an indication of the wellbeing of the twelve meridians which each pulse equates to. The structure, colour and coating of your tongue can also provide additional information about your health.

It is best to wear loose clothing and not eat a large meal or drink strong coffee or alcohol prior to a consultation.

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles around your body (head, ears, torso, legs and arms) and not necessarily at the point of pain. The needles can be left in for 20-40mins or removed immediately. Sometimes moxibustion is used. You may feel a tingling or dull ache sensation, but usually no discomfort when the needles are inserted.

I first attended Appletree Clinic in 2001 on the recommendation of a friend. I had been diagnosed several years earlier with scoliosis of the spine and with arthritis in both my lower spine and right hip. At the time, due to stressful circumstances in my life, I was suffering pain and discomfort. I was a little apprehensive at the thought of acupuncture but was soon reassured by the care and thoroughness of the examination and discussion with Kevin. I found the acupuncture both very relaxing and pain relieving and gradually the length of time between treatments increased. For many years now I have attended Kevin once every few months, as needed, and have always found the level of care and attention to be of the highest standard.

As predicted by the Orthopaedic Consultants, my condition has deteriorated with age. While acupuncture has not cured it, it has given a great deal of pain relief and consequently, increased mobility, for which I am very thankful.

E.P.

Acupuncturist’s Perspective: While Traditional Chinese Acupuncture can never cure osteoarthritis, it is very effective in reducing the pain and symptoms, thus facilitating as near a normal life style as possible.

Having been diagnosed with fertility issues accompanied with anxiety and depression, I decided to try acupuncture. After having an initial consultation with Kevin, a course of treatment was discussed. Kevin explained how acupuncture worked and the process of inserting the needles. The needles were painless and once they were in you couldn’t feel them. You then get about an hour to relax in one of the private rooms.

The whole experience of acupuncture for me was a positive one. After the sessions were over I felt relaxed and would always have a good nights sleep. The days following, I seemed to have more energy. At the beginning, I started once a week, which reduced to once a month.

After six months of attending sessions, I fell pregnant. I still attended throughout my pregnancy and found them to be extremely relaxing and have only just stopped.

I would recommend acupuncture to anyone in my position, as I fully believed it contributed to the recovery of depression and the eventual pregnancy.

Acupuncturist’s Perspective: Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is very good at de-stressing and relaxing certain individuals. Stress can be a major contributing factor in some fertility cases.

I was diagnosed with Benign Postural Vertigo a few months ago. It was awful. I could not lie flat or turn over to my left as this made me feel extremely dizzy. I couldn’t leave the house on my own for fear of passing out. My GP tried to perform the Epley Manoeuvre which is recommended for this condition but I couldn’t go through with it, so I looked for alternative help. Luckily I phoned Appletree Clinic and they thought they could help. The diagnosis was confirmed and I started a course of Cranial Osteopathy with Natasha. Since then I have greatly improved and now have the confidence to go out. I am so glad I tried this option.

Osteopath’s Perspective: Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle and effective treatment and can be an alternative to the more commonly known structural osteopathy. It is helpful for all ages but is often associated with the treatment of babies.
